Aquatic Therapy

Kansas Masonic Home is one of the few providers in Wichita utilizing aquatic therapy in addition to traditional therapy. Aquatic therapy is a type of physical therapy that involves performing exercises in the water. Utilizing aquatic therapy in addition to traditional therapy provides many benefits such as:

•

Improved muscle tone and strength.

Increased cardiovascular function.

Increased circulation, endurance, flexibility, range of motion, balance, and coordination.

One of the main benefits of aquatic therapy is the buoyancy that the water provides the senior. While in the water, the human body feels much lighter than it would feel on land. This decrease in weight bearing reduces the force and stresses placed on the joints. The buoyancy acts as support for the spine or extremity that may be weakened due to disease, injury, surgery, or immobilization. This makes it possible for people to achieve a position of comfort for exercise not possible on land. Studies show that this aspect of aquatic therapy is especially helpful for seniors with arthritis, stress fractures, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder and arm injuries, spinal pain and stenosis.

Aquatic therapy also can help promote healing to the site of injury. By exercising in warm water, vasodilatation of the blood vessels occurs. This increases blood flow to the injury and result in increase oxygen delivery and healing of damaged tissue
