“I’m 100% committed to Culture Change at KMH. Probably 99 percent of all of the retirement communities in the world, have been doing what they do, in terms of providing care to people for the last 60 years, the same way. And the way they do that is a very institutional, disconnected—almost a lack of human connection—assembly line approach that uses a warehousing type of operation. The main problem with that is there’s no independence. You move into a place and you give over all your rights, all your freedom, all of your choice, all of those things and somebody else takes care of you all day long every day. They tell you when to wake up, they tell you what you’re going eat and when you’re going eat it. They tell you when you’re going bathe, and how often that’s going happen, and what that process is going be like—and it’s a very efficient way to do things, and it’s a very easy way to monitor to make sure nobody’s getting mistreated, but the thing that’s lost in that is a human. Is the person.”
