David Shuman
  David Shuman
Director of Building Services

David’s resume is fairly short. He’s worked at KMH. For a very, very, very long time—in fact, he might have actually started at KMH before he could legally vote.

It is doubtful that in 1988, when David was hired as a Maintenance Helper in Environmental Services that he, or anyone else, had any idea how much he would contribute to Kansas Masonic Home.  Clearly possessing a loyalty streak a mile wide, David also has an uncanny ability to look at things other people see as problems and reverse-engineer or design a solution that is often brilliant in its simplicity. He gets employees and residents excited about what could be and the finds a way to make it happen. when our Pavilion residents wanted to help with the Culture Change inspired demolition of the nurse’s stations, David and his team figured out a way to make it happen in a manner that was both safe and tremendously fun. With that type of skill and tenacity as well as his leadership abilities, David surely had opportunities to leave KMH--fortunately for us he kept finding new challenges and responsibilities right here.

As Director of Building Services, David’s team members and responsibilities include everything from the physical appearance of the campus (grounds, housekeeping, and maintenance); to security; communications; information services and environment.

His vast knowledge of the campus, the buildings and infrastructure as well as the history of KMH is often both ridiculously helpful and just ridiculous. The nature of his job is such that David is likely be consulted before embarking on any campus project or event—but we’ve all learned to include David in the earliest conversation stage lest we spend time hashing out a plan or puzzling over a problem, only to have David smile and disappear for a few minutes or click away on the computer for 10 seconds and hand out an itemized list, outline, blueprint or some other complete solution that’s already been prepared.
